Vascular diseases are among the most common and also the ones with the most severe consequences, especially when diagnosed and treated too late. Angiology is the newest subcategory of internal medicine, and it is becoming more and more significant. It deals with disease of the arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels.
Isolating angiology from other medical fields is not always possible nor is it desirable. The most common vascular diseases include arterial occlusive disease and diabetic foot syndrome, acute veinous thrombosis, thrombophlebitis as well as venous insufficiency and chronic wounds. The Angiologist is the patient's guide through the different courses of treatment, at the same time he is the expert for accompanying internal diseases or risk factors like arterial hypertension, diabetes or lipid metabolic disorder.
Close cooperation, especially with surgeons and radiologists, is therefore a must. The examination methods used in our office are all pain free and non invasive; color duplex sonography (a special vascular sonography) plays a major role.
