Phlebology is the medical specialty that focuses on veins and their disorders. Veins are a part of our circulatory system, they return the depleted blood to the heart. Unlike the arteries they need less pressure to do this and therefore have less muscles. About 90% of our blood circulates in the veins. As it flows slowly this can cause Thrombi – clots and congestion- under less then ideal circumstances. Said thrombi can cause life threatening pulmonary embolisms.
Other venous diseases are insufficiency of the venous valves that lead to congestion of the depleted blood in the affected region of the body, most commonly the legs, thus causing heaviness, insufficient supply with oxygen for the tissue which can lead to ulcera. Dilation of the veins is called varicosis or varicose veins. In addition to serious malfunctions of the venous system , unaesthetic disformations like spider veins or star burst varices can manifest. All of these can be treated by a Phlebologist.
